 TOMAHAWK INFORMATION FOR PARENTS:

Parent Volunteers

The troop needs parent volunteers for the week or even a few days of the Tomahawk week.  Shifts can be from Saturday to Tuesday and then Wednesday to Saturday. The troop can hold up to 8 adults at a time during the week (Mothers or Fathers). If you are interested in going to Camp Tomahawk as an adult, please contact Assistant Scoutmaster Dave Johnson at 218-464-0921 to discuss your interest - we need you!  If you have already committed to going to Tomahawk this summer as an adult leader, you too need to have a current health form on file. Check with Ann Sanford for the proper procedure.

Camp mail

You are encouraged to write to your son while he is in camp.  Mail gets to camp in one or two days.  Mail arriving after your son leaves camp will be returned to sender if a return address is provided.  Packages are welcome, but remember that food treats require special storage in limited-space bear boxes.  All deliveries should be addressed as the following:

Name: ___________________
Troop 9 -Aspen Campsite
Tomahawk Scout Reservation
N1910 Scout Road
Birchwood, WI 54817

Telephone service

Emergency land-line telephone service is available to the Tomahawk Administration Center only.  Please, DO NOT place calls to scouts or leaders except in emergency situations.  The camp telephone at the Central Services Building is (715) 354-3841.  Allow 1-3 hours for a return call as all campsites are 2-3 miles from the Administration Center and the person you are calling may be on a hike or other activity that has taken them away from their campsite area.  Cellular telephone coverage is unreliable at the camp and the Troop discourages cellular telephone calls to & from the boys.

Medical care

First aid, routine medical care and medication administration are normally provided by a group of trained health officers who are regular staff at Tomahawk.  Usually, one or more Troop 9 parent volunteers are qualified to provide this same care.  A volunteer physician and/or physicans from Rice Lake Wisconsin, assist in providing camp medical services.  In case of serious accidents, illness or hospitalization, parent(s) will be contacted.  Medical care given at camp is with no charge to the parent(s).  Treatment outside of camp is at the parents' expense or is filed with their health insurance provider.

Religious services

Protestant and Catholic chaplains serve the camp and provide Saturday or Sunday services.  In addition, they provide counseling and program help throughout the week.  An inter-faith service is conducted by other camp staff.

Family Visiting Day

Wednesday is Outpost Day and Family Visiting Day for the troops at White Pine Camp.  For Troop 9, Outpost day means:

  • A morning hike and visit to Tomahawk’s Logging Camp site,

  • Cheeseburgers in Paradise at the Logging Camp,

  • A hike back to White Pine after lunch,

  • A chance for families to visit and see what camp is all about,

  • One merit badge block late in the afternoon,

  • A nice dinner for everyone back at White Pine Camp.

So, come on Wednesday to share your Scout’s adventure at Tomahawk. (Please don't bring pets - they are prohibited). Feel free to arrive at any time during the day and to stay as long as you want.  To dine with the Troop (we'd love to have you) while at camp, you must sign up in advance (on Saturday at the bus at Glen Avon) with the Troop 9 Tomahawk Adult Coordinator (Judge Dave Johnson) and pay $5 per person per meal (lunch and/or dinner).

To join us for lunch, plan to arrive between 10:00 and 12:00 and go directly to the Logging Camp.  When you arrive, check in at the Berglund Welcome Center. Ask for directions to the Logging camp.  Drive to the site and join us for activities and lunch.

After lunch, the Scouts hike back to White Pine Camp for an afternoon merit badge block.  Visitors are welcome to join and observe the activities.

To join us after lunch, plan to arrive at about 3:30 for the Merit Badge Block or at 5:00 for dinner.  In either case, check in at the Berglund Welcome Center.  Ask for directions to the Aspen campsite.

At dinner, the Troop takes over the dining shelter for a home-cooked dinner.  Visitors are invited.  Feel free to linger after dinner and visit with your Scout.
