Camp Tomahawk

TOMAHAWK UPDATE as of 6/23/2016

Tuesday the 28th will partly be a planning meeting for Tomahawk.  Attached to this email (See email sent out)  is a current roster of Scouts attending camp, along with the merit badges they were approved for.  If your Scout has a ‘pending’ next to his name, it’s because the requests were submitted late and I will update as soon as I hear whether they got into their requested merit badges.

I do need parents present on Tuesday to help fill out merit badge cards.  The cards MUST be legible (hence, the need for parents).  I will also briefly go over some other information related to the week at camp and be glad to answer any questions that you might have.

Some things to think about for camp.

1.       Check the flashlights that the Scout is bringing; probably have more than one and make sure it works!

2.       Label everything!

3.       Box mosquito net should be purchased by now.

4.       Buy a small plastic container (shoe box size) for smellables and write their name on it; every side, preferably.

5.       Make sure they have a water bottle and that it is labelled with their name and troop number!  This is key; so many water bottles get lost because of this.

6.       Remember, we leave on Saturday, July 9th.  We will eat lunch on the road, so they will need to have a bag lunch.

TOMAHAWK UPDATE as of 4/25/2016

Swimming ability and tests are requested prior to Camp Tomahawk.  Troop 9 will administer swim tests on Tuesday April 26th, 2016 at Lincoln Park Middle School Pool from 6:45 pm-8:15 pm.  Scouts attending Tomahawk in 2016 should make every attemp to make this swim test. Bring $3 dollars, towel and goggles if you have them. Showers are available.  If you cannot attend, please contact Scoutmaster Ken Stafford or Judge Dave Johnson.  Here is the link for the requirments for your review. Click HERE  for the link.

TOMAHAWK UPDATE as of 3/29/2016

Tomahawk update! (Please see email from 3/29/16). Not posted on public website for privacy.

I’ve attached my most up to date list with the programs requested by the boys.  Sign up for the high adventure programs begins on Friday, so please let me know if I’ve missed anybody.

For the adults, we are almost full; we should really only have 8 on any given day.  Let me know if you do want to attend, though, and I will work something out.

I’m worried that the new parents of the boys who have recently joined may not be getting these emails.  If anyone knows the parents, please forward to them.

Let me know if you have questions!  July 9th is rapidly approaching!

Dave

TOMAHAWK UPDATE as of 3/11/2016

Attached (please see the email that was sent for attachments. Not posted publicly for privacy) is the latest list of Scouts and Adults signed up to attend Tomahawk this summer.  I had to guess at some of the ages, so correct if it is wrong.  Some boys have programs next to their names; all First Year Scouts attend Brownsea; older Scouts may try to sign up for other ‘high adventure’ programs offered through Tomahawk.  The information regarding these programs was sent out in an earlier email.  Contact me if you need to see it again and want to discuss with your Scout.  I may not have spelled some names right; if so, please contact me at david.johnson@courts.state.mn.us and I will correct it.

Here is what we need to be thinking about;

1.        If your son’s name is on the list and it should not be, let me know.

2.       If your son’s name is NOT on the list and it should be, let me know, along with his age at Tomahawk and possible programs.

3.       I will sign up all the boys for the high adventure programs beginning April 1.  We will find out on April 15 who got in.  It goes by age, so I might need birthdays, but I will find out.

4.       Cost of Tomahawk is yet to be determined, but expect it to be around $300, give or take.  Adults will be about $50, give or take.  That is up to the Exec Committee, not me.

5.       We have room for adults, and I really need adults of first years to make a commitment to attend; all 1st years go to Brownsea, and we have to provide adult leadership every day for that program.  I can take a max of 8 adults per day at Tomahawk.

6.       You MUST have a current physical; please see the Troop 9 website to get the form.  This includes adults attending.

7.       Payments are different this year; in the past, we have just paid the day of camp.  This year, Tomahawk is requiring payment by June 1.  More information will be forthcoming as to the cost, but be prepared to pay earlier than usual this year.

8.       Refunds are on a case by case basis, but generally speaking, unless it is an emergency, refunds will not be given.

9.       We are going to do our swim qual here instead of at camp.  That means, when we have a swim night scheduled, Tomahawk scouts MUST attend in order to get their swim qual taken care of.

That’s enough info for now.  I will be sending out more info later, but these are the big things we need to accomplish.  Again, I need to know who’s going and what program they want (if any, not required), payments are early this year, physicals must be done, and swim quals!

Thanks!  I can’t wait for July 9th!

Dave

CAMP TOMAHAWK is a wonderful week of fun, outdoor adventure and allows your scout to meet other scouts from other troops and build comrade with the other Troop 9 scouts.  The camp is located in Wisconsin and is an easy drive from Duluth.   2016 dates will be July 9-16th, 2016. The troop needs parent volunteers for the week or even a few days of the Tomahawk week.  Shifts can be from Saturday to Tuesday and then Wednesday to Saturday. The troop can hold up to 8 adults at a time during the week (Mothers or Fathers). If you are interested in going to Camp Tomahawk as an adult, please contact Assistant Scoutmaster Dave Johnson at 218 - 464 - 0921 to discuss your interest - we need you!  If you have already committed to going to Tomahawk this summer as an adult leader, you too need to have a current health form on file. Check with Ann Sanford for the proper procedure.

  • Payment is due before June 1st , 2016 in order for your Scout’s to attend.

    • youth: $ 290--- for regular camp

    • $320 for high adventure ($20 extra than regular campers)

    • adults: $ 50 for the entire week

    • $ Ask Judge Dave Johnson for partial week option/fee

    •  Financial assistance is available from the troop and/or the Council (for more information, contact Scoutmaster Ken Stafford or Treasurer Mr. Mike Beery).

    • Make checks out to Troop 9 or complete a signed Scout Account form (authorizing the use of money that your scout has earned selling popcorn or wreaths).  This fee includes the base cost that the Troop has to pay for your scout, troop overhead costs (including transportation fees and troop supplies), and a T-shirt.

  • Indicate in the (memo space on the check or scout account form) what adult T-shirt size will be best for your scout so we can attempt to order enough in each size category.

  • Complete an Individual Scout Merit Badge Plan form (merit badges and high adventure).  This step does not apply for the First-year Scouts, since they stay together as a group with some of our adult leaders and complete the Brownsea  program and the two additional merit badges for their first time at camp.

  • Scouts do not need a mess kit (bowls, plates, utensils) for Tomahawk Camp.

  • Non-smellable box (for a small amount of snacks and toiletries) should be around the size of a shoebox (plastic/sealable)

  • Make sure scouts know what items to bring if they need them for their merit badges (ie: swim suit for swimming merit badge etc).

  • Each scout needs box-shaped netting for inside the canvas tent and a tarp for underneath the cot to limit misquito bites.

  • A bag lunch is required for the day of departure of Camp Tomahawk.

Tomahawk Medication Policy

The state of Wisconsin has enacted a law that removes the requirement that camps distribute medications from a central location. Now Scoutmasters and other leaders are able to distribute medications in unit campsites. This new provision is great for a few reasons:

1. Ensures that Scouts are receiving medication from the same person that they would on a weekend campout.
2. The person administering the medication knows the Scout, mostly likely their parent, and knows how to contact them if there are any questions. Any special instructions can be explained by the parent directly to the person administering the medication before the unit even begins their summer camp session.
3. Receiving medication in the campsite doesn't single out Scouts that need medication as much as traveling to a centralized place in camp does. It can fit fairly seamlessly into campsite routine.
4. General reduction of confusion, summer camp prep, and the exchange of medication.

A couple things to note:

1. Emergency medication like inhalers and Epi-pens should still be carried by the individual Scout at all times.
2. Medications should be kept in their original containers. That means in the labeled prescription bottle that shows the dosage. The weekly SMTWTFS dispensers are great for home, but not for Boy Scout Activities.
3. Medications must be kept in a locked container ensuring that only the person designated to administer the medication has access to it. Camp will provide a lock box for any unit that does not have one of their own. It is encouraged that each unit have a lock box of its own for use at other campouts throughout the year.
4. If any unit wishes to have Tomahawk handle, store, and administer their unit medication to their Scouts we will be available to do so.
